Moorgumpin is within the area referred to as Quandamooka Moreton Bay region and was historically inhabited by the Ngugi people. From the early stages of World War II, defence batteries were set up on Moreton Island and a naval base and jetty were built at Tanglaooma. Following the war, commercial operations in sand mining and whaling continued until , when local entrepreneurs purchased the Tangalooma site via perpetual lease from the Queensland Government.
Tangalooma Island Resort has a perpetual lease from the Queensland Government for tourism purposes over several parcels of land, and over the years has conducted significant works in extracting the military and whaling refuse and remnants from the area. Tangalooma now offers a range of accommodation including modern style units, 2 storey family villas, hotel rooms and luxury beachfront apartments, in addition to a full range of resort facilities designed to meet the demands of both Australian and international travellers.

WW2 Relics. The resort holds a perpetual lease from the Queensland Government over the developed section of the island, which was a result of a deal struck in the glory days of the former Bjelke-Petersen government when the tourism industry was undergoing a major change.
Like a council, it provides lots — including homes and apartments — with waste disposal, gas and electricity connections, sewerage, roads, access to swimming pools, as well as beach, jetty and garden maintenance. Property owners have for the first time spoken out publicly, saying they were powerless to stop the operating expenses from rising.
Drew Wilson built a house behind the resort in , but said the property now threatened to bankrupt him. Shortly after operating expenses began rising about 10 years ago, the resort's management introduced a 'discount' for some residents at its own discretion.
A clause on the invoices states the discount was valid so long as "neither party shall hereafter dispute, challenge or otherwise contest this invoice and the calculations contained herein". Warren Patterson built a home on the island in and is also struggling to pay the annual charges. He said many others are too frightened to speak up out of fear of losing their discount.
Do I walk away? On Monday, more than Quandamooka people voted to unanimously support two draft Indigenous Land Use Agreements that have been negotiated with the Queensland government for four years. A federal court will now begin to decide the final Native Title Tribunal application on November Cameron Costello is the chief executive of the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation, which is progressing the native title application on Mulgumpin Moreton Island.
