While we struggled, in came a really good Snake Eyes script. Dwayne Johnson starred as Roadblock in Retaliation , which was preceded by 's G. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. According to Bonaventura, it wasn't a situation of waiting to finish development on a Retaliation sequel or a Snake Eyes script.
Snake Eyes was one approach, while the producers also debated a movie about the Baroness character from G. Joe , the villainess lieutenant of Cobra Commander. The Snake Eyes script, from Evan Spiliotopoulos , came along at the right time. But in a world where IP-specific franchises were taking over, we still ended up with a sequel anyway. Directed by Jon M. It was delayed from summer to Easter to give it an overseas-friendly 3-D conversion.
Political prescience notwithstanding , Retaliation thrived during its Snake Eyes-centric action beats, amused when immersed in Cobra but bored when dealing with the Joes themselves. However, Retaliation got worse reviews than Rise of Cobra. Few folks walked out of either film excessively jazzed for the next installment. Nonetheless, we ended up with a third G. View All Critic Reviews Jun 20, Pretty surprising beginning to the film as it continues the storyline set in the first film. Dwayne Johnson steps into the spotlight in this one as Roadblock and is great. The action sequences are well done even if the movie as a whole is still not all that great, at least it's better than the first one.
Still hoping Sgt. Slaughter makes an appearance eventually. Patrick W Super Reviewer. Jan 24, It was an entertaining flick. A lot of plot holes and dumbed down for the masses but this kind of movie isn't made to be the movie of the year, just for the box office numbers, so it's alright.
Chris H Super Reviewer. Nov 29, It's been almost five years, but after production problems, release delays and all that other mumbo jumbo, "G. Joe" is back in action, undoubtedly because of popular demand. Yeah, you can forget Duke as the iconic protagonist for this series, because Tatum has built up too much integrity to stay long here, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt has done exactly the same, if not more so, although I can't help but feel as though the real reason why he didn't even touch this project was because he even saw how bad he was in "The Rise of Cobra" and didn't want to run the risk of further damaging his reputation as a talent by working with a director as incompetent as Stephen Sommers again.
Well, don't worry, people, because not even Sommers came back for this, and he came back for a second installment in the "Mummy" series He didn't direct the third one, though, so maybe he's getting a better understanding of when enough is enough when it comes to lame blockbusters , although these filmmakers were able to score the Scorpion King, even if it's only because Dwayne Johnson appears to be on a mission to be involved in most every machismo action franchise he can possibly be involved in.
Shoot, just for good measure, the makers of this film also scored Bruce Willis, as well as Ray Stevenson, so you know that this is going to be a man's man's movie Hey, Jon M.
