But ruminating will hold you back. If you're ruminating, you need to change the channel. Telling yourself, "Don't think about that," isn't likely to be effective. Your brain will revert back to those unpleasant thoughts in about two seconds. You have to be proactive about changing the channel in your brain sort of like you'd change the channel on your TV. The best way to do that is to get involved in an activity that distracts you.
Find something that requires some serious mental energy for at least a few minutes. The key is to find something that works for you. You may need to experiment with a few different strategies until you find the activity that best helps you change the channel in your brain. If you are one of these people, it is recommended to exercise at least one to two hours before bedtime. Practice meditation. Similar to self-compassion, mindfulness — the practice of being fully present and focusing your attention on thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations without judgment — is also an antidote to the rumination that can keep you up at night.
By being fully present in the moment, you are not rehashing past events or worrying about future events. There is ample research on the positive effects of meditation on anxiety and stress. Further, researchers in the Netherlands found that even small amounts of mindful meditation 10 minutes before and after work for two work weeks helped calm racing minds, improve sleep quality, and sleep duration.
By employing the strategies above, you can increase your ability to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the workday. You have 1 free article s left this month. You wish you could stop having these thoughts, but they keep occurring. Write down your upsetting thoughts in order of the most stressful to the least stressful. Start practicing thought-stopping with the thought that is the least stressful. Here's an example of a list, starting with the most stressful: I'm always worried that something bad will happen to my child, even if she just gets a cold.
I just know that one of us is going to get laid off from work. I'm so nervous about making a presentation at work that it's all I can think about. Imagine the thought. Sit or lie down in a private place so you can say "Stop! Close your eyes. Imagine a situation in which you might have this stressful thought. Then allow yourself to focus on the thought.
Stop the thought. Startling yourself is a good way to interrupt the thought. Try one of these two techniques: Set a timer, watch, or other alarm for 3 minutes. Then focus on your unwanted thought. When the timer or alarm goes off, shout "Stop! These actions and saying "Stop" are cues to stop thinking. Empty your mind, and try to keep it empty for about 30 seconds.
If the upsetting thought comes back during that time, shout "Stop! Instead of using a timer, you can tape-record yourself shouting "Stop! Do the thought-stopping exercise. Focus on the thought, and then stop thinking about the unwanted thought—or anything else—when you hear your recorded voice say "Stop. Practice steps 1 through 3 until the thought goes away on command.
